Our Programs
Pilipino Youth Coalition – San Mateo County
The Pilipino Youth Coalition – San Mateo County (PYC-SMC) is a support group of predominatnlty high school-aged students. Although we are highly comprised of Pilipino youth, we do value diversity. Kalayaan School for Equity
The Kalayaan School for Equity (KSE) is an organization dedicated to helping meet the educational needs of the Filipino community of North San Mateo County—whether it’s by providing relevant educational workshops, offering arts training, showcasing local talent, conducting community-based research, helping local students with academic help or enrichment activities, or by serving as a publisher to get the ideas and stories of our community out there. Downe Organizing Project
The Downe Organizing Project (DOP) is a newly formed community-based organizing group with a focus to raise the political, social and economic consciousness of Downe men in San Francisco and Daly City through education and critical action. Using grass-root techniques, we aim to analyze the conditions of our community, mobilize the community’s members to action, and organize them into a strong consolidated force. We value the belief we can teach and inter-changeably learn from our constituency. We take it upon ourselves to understand the root problems of our issues, and define ourselves as Downe men in an effort to uplift and better our community.

Special Events
Filipino Kommunity Kommencement
In the spring, Liwanag Kultural Center sponsors a Filipino Kommunity Kommencement (FKK) to honor students graduating from local high schools and community colleges in San Mateo County. This event recognizes Filipino students on a more intimate level than the commencement ceremonies conducted at their respective schools. It is also a chance for us all to honor the academic achievements of our young Filipino graduates as well as highlight the importance of education in the Filipino community of San Mateo County.
