About the Liwanag Kultural Center

The Liwanag Kultural Center is a grassroots, Daly City-based Filipino non-profit community organization that exists to provide culturally relevant educational, leadership and artistic development opportunities for the Filipino Community of North San Mateo County and to serve as a center for community activity. Filipinos living in the United States currently lack meaningful access to information about their heritage, the issues that face their community, and options to share their life experiences with others; the Liwanag Kultural Center seeks to provide the tools needed to foster positive and healthy self-identities amongst Filipinos living in North San Mateo County, empower them with the skills to help them organize themselves to address community needs, and provide creative avenues for community members to share their stories with the world. The Liwanag Kultural Center is a “second home” for the Filipino community where the following key values are upheld and practiced:

  • Kinship: A general sense of family and support for one another
  • Pakikisama: The sense of community built on the foundation that cooperating with others is often times more important than one’s own desires
  • Empowerment: The recognition of the strength that each of us has, especially when we work together, as well as the celebration of self-determination which emphasizes the initiative of the Filipino community in addressing its needs
  • Equity: An emphasis on relationships and interactions based on social justice and fair treatment
